Interior

The interior of the small Alteneuschule is an amalgam of its early Gothic heritage and the Alemor of the Renaissance design. Note the chair on the Eastern Wall (in the right center of this picture) which was used only by the famous Rabbi Judah ben Bezalel Low otherwise known as the Maharal. He died in 1609 and nobody else has been allowed to use his bench. Sabbath services in this intimate, warm and magical synagogue allow a visitor to imagine ages past with little difficulty.

This synagogue is now back in the ownership of the Jewish Community of Prague and is open to the general public with the purchase of a yarmulke or scull cap. (All male and female heads must be covered as is required in the Bible.) The funds gathered are used to maintain this building which sees over a million visitors a year.
